2019 CME EXPORT AWARD | Canadian Kraft Paper Industries
After 45 years, the pulp and paper mill in The Pas, Manitoba was shutting down. The adjacent sawmill had been shuttered ten years prior and the small, isolated town of 5,000 (located 400 miles north of Winnipeg) was now bracing for the final economic shock. The closure announcement by the mill’s owner, Tolko Industries, led to the immediate loss of 300 jobs with suppliers to the mill, such as woodlands contractors; loggers, chippers and truck drivers who sold off their equipment and hunkered down to survive a long, lean winter. The mill’s 330 union employees prepared for their own unemployment when the mill would cease operations in December 2016. In this crisis, executives at American Industrial Acquisition Corporation (AIAC) saw an opportunity. Under extreme time pressures, the complex transaction resulted in an AIAC affiliated company, Canadian Kraft Paper Industries (CKPI), successfully purchasing the mill 3 weeks before the planned shutdown. In 18 months, the mill has gone from multi-million losses in 2016 to a profitable 2017 and record profitability in 2018, all of which is re-invested into the mill in the form of capital expenditures and working capital. Canadian Kraft Paper Industries Ltd. distributes unbleached kraft paper to the USA, Mexico, Guatemala, Central South America, Europe, Middle East, Egypt, Africa, UAE, Saudi Arabia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, Taiwan and of course Canada. Their global reach includes major developed markets for uses such as agriculture and food service, as well as emerging countries for construction and chemical applications.

PDAC 2012 Special Achievement Award
Special Achievement Award From time to time, the PDAC presents a Special Achievement Award that recognizes exceptional contributions to the mineral industry. This year, the association has chosen to honour the Mine Training Society (MTS) for providing Aboriginal people in northern Canada with the opportunity to develop usable job skills for the mining industry and for developing a pool of skilled workers for the industry. MTS is a non-profit organization comprising Aboriginal, industry, and government partners. Its objectives are to: i) screen, select, train, and place northerners in all areas of mining; and ii) in cooperation with the NWT's education system and communities, build a legacy of education and awareness about the employee and skill requirements of the mining industry. MTS works with mining companies and industry service providers to bring training and jobs together, funding up to 50% of eligible costs for training programs. Priority for funding is given to training proposals that are skills based and lead directly to employment. The MTS is a pioneer in this area and serves as a model for the other training societies across the North. Since 2004, the MTS and its partners have trained 854 individuals out of a total 1,095 applications, and 600 people have been employed in the mine and mine services sector. Courses offered include: general trades training; environmental monitoring; first aid first responder; driller helper; underground mining (heavy equipment operator, etc.); and mineral process operation.

Man Quits Job in Finance to Create Incredible Permaculture Property - From Finance to Farmer
Andrew Martin once worked in the finance industry in Australia, but after learning about the true state of the world as peak oil and climate change begin to take effect, he knew he had to leave that unsustainable lifestyle behind and do something useful to help heal the earth and to be more resilient in the face of change. He and his wife Beth moved to New Zealand, where they’re in the process of turning green-desert farmland into a productive and bountiful forest of food. It’s incredible to see how much they’re harvesting after just three years. Andrew researches extensively about the big interconnected issues in the realms of economy, environment and energy and offers his skills and knowledge to city and regional councils that need to build their own resilience (that would be pretty much all of them!). Extreme trucking on Vancouver Island
This is the most extreme, heavy, off-road trucking in the world.... Trucks that are 16 feet wide, can carry loads of huge old growth timber that weigh 130 tons, gross weight of truck and load can be as much as 180 tons. This is done on roads that are very steep "as much as 20% down grades", barely as wide as the truck with as many as twelve switchbacks that cling to the sides of the mountain for thousands of feet, with drop offs of hundreds and sometimes thousands of feet at nearly every turn. Narrow bridges, soft spots, muddy slippery conditions, extreme fog, and in most cases two trucks cannot pass each other.. they must use call points on the radio to inform all the other divers of locations... Fog, rain, ice, etc all add to the conditions that make this the most demanding, and unforgiving trucking job in the world. The men that drive these trucks tend to have decades of experience and know the vehicles inside and out... mistakes are deadly in this business. I had always wanted to see these trucks in action... and boy did I ever get my chance. These guys make ice road truckers look like Sunday drive in the country. This video will give you just a little idea of what its like to drive two hours into the high timber, meeting other giant trucks all the way, to bring 120 tons of logs off a mountain and haul it to a dryland sort at an inlet on the Pacific Ocean. Awsome is the only way to describe the feeling to be in this huge truck in these conditions. Thanks to Steve and the mighty "H-17" 1975 Hayes HDX off road log truck.

Here Debby Bacharach, writer and tutor of DebbyBacharach.com, revisits her popular tips for writing a statement of purpose, which she previously shared as part of a Navigating Grad School as a Working Professional event hosted by UW Professional & Continuing Education. http://www.keeplearning.uw.edu 10 Tips for Writing an Effective Statement of Purpose 1. Put your face on the page. 2. Don't panic -- brainstorm. 3. Get another perspective. 4. Let it all flow and edit later. 5. Keep your writing lively. 6. Make it clear you've done your homework. 7. Show you care. 8. Answer every part of every question. 9. Make sure your essay reflects your work. 10. Give yourself time. Video Transcript: I’m Debbie Backrack, I’ve been a college writing instructor for over 25 years. And I’ve helped hundreds of people write their statements of purpose successfully. I’ve also been on the other side of the desk and I’ve read these statements for admissions committees. I have a good sense of what people are looking for and how to get started with it and how to do this successfully. The main goal of the statement is to make all these numbers about your, your transcripts, your GRE scores, take all these numbers and make them come alive, make you alive as a person. We call this putting your face on the page. You’re here because you did not take a direct route to grad school and admissions is excited about that. They want to know about that, maybe you were a cook in Alaska and from talking to people you decided “oh I wanted to be a social worker”, or maybe you’ve been a midwife your whole career and you realized there’s not enough research to support how you want to help your client and you decided to become an epidemiologist so that you can create that research. These are the “ah moments” they are looking for, when did you get inspired, what excited you about coming into their program? That’s what they’re looking for. So here’s how not to get started: don’t put the question in front of you and stare and stare and panic and look at your watch, and go” it’s due in three”, don’t do that to yourself. Many of us have done it but I want to give you 2 ways you can avoid that. Number one: think about categories, jobs you’ve had, skills you have, awards you’ve won, 10 things that related to this career you’re thinking about that you think really would really fit. 10 things from your life that have nothing to do with this potential career and make all these categories and just fill them in, fill them in with whatever you think of including things that are probably bad ideas and won’t come into your essay but just give it to yourself. And then let it sit a little bit and have a friend come and look at it with you and pick out what might help tell your story and focus who you are. Because you are often can’t see what in your own story might help tell it. So I have a personal example of this; I was writing an essay about failure and I’ve thought about times I’ve failed, a job I didn’t get, an award I didn’t get, and a friend of mine said “oh how do you cope with all that failure?” I thought “what are you talking about” but I’m at poet and I send out hundreds and hundreds of poems all year and maybe I get 3 accepted. And she was just amazed that I wasn’t distressed by this. I thought “oh I don’t think of that as failure” that’s interesting, that makes for a much more interesting essay and a new focus on it that I wouldn’t have thought of myself. So bring someone in to help you figure that out. I also recommend free writing and this is a technique where you have to ask your personal editor you know the one that tells you that’s a stupid idea, you spelled that wrong, you’re never gonna get into grad school- that person. Tell them to go you know take a break, take a cup of coffee, they’ll get a chance to proof read but not right now. And then you sit down and you set a timer for maybe ten minutes and you write. And you just write and write and you just whatever comes whatever connecting ideas that you didn’t think of you just let it all flow. You’re kind of tapping into your subconscious a little bit and what happens is images you didn’t think would come, there’s a lot of power in your writing that wasn’t there before. Again, this is not your final draft, I understand you are writing a professional document but this is a way to get moving with it...

Outside The PDAC World, Do People Care About Mining?
Canadian residents, particularly in northern Ontario, are well informed of mining activities and the metals industry as a whole, according to Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development and Mines of Ontario. “We know that some communities are simply focused on mining developments because that’s where all the employment comes from,” Gravelle told Kitco News on the sidelines of the PDAC 2018. Gravelle noted that mining exploration provides a boon to the local economies where miners operate. _________________________________________________________________ Kitco News is the world’s #1 source of metals market information. (wikipedia) Hamilton: An American Musical is a sung-through musical about the life of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, with music, lyrics and book by Lin-Manuel Miranda.[1] The show, inspired by the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by historian Ron Chernow, achieved both critical acclaim and box office success. The musical made its Off-Broadway debut at The Public Theater in February 2015, where its engagement was sold out. The show transferred to Broadway in August 2015 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. On Broadway, it received enthusiastic critical reception and unprecedented advance box office sales. In 2016, Hamilton received a record-setting 16 Tony nominations, winning 11, including Best Musical, and was also the recipient of the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The prior off-Broadway production of Hamilton won the 2015 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical as well as seven other Drama Desk Awards out of 14 total nominated categories. // What is Facebook? (wikipedia) Facebook is an American for-profit corporation and online social media and social networking service based in Menlo Park, California, United States. The Facebook website was launched on February 4, 2004, by Mark Zuckerberg, along with fellow Harvard College students and roommates, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. The founders had initially limited the website's membership to Harvard students; however, later they expanded it to higher education institutions in the Boston area, the Ivy League schools, and Stanford University. Facebook gradually added support for students at various other universities, and eventually to high school students as well. Since 2006, anyone age 13 and older has been allowed to become a registered user of Facebook, though variations exist in the minimum age requirement, depending on applicable local laws. The Facebook name comes from the face book directories often given to United States university students Facebook may be accessed by a large range of desktops, laptops, tablet computers, and smartphones over the Internet and mobile networks. After registering to use the site, users can create a user profile indicating their name, occupation, schools attended and so on. Users can add other users as "friends", exchange messages, post status updates and digital photos, share digital videos and links, use various software applications ("apps"), and receive notifications when others update their profiles or make posts. Additionally, users may join common-interest user groups organized by workplace, school, hobbies or other topics, and categorize their friends into lists such as "People From Work" or "Close Friends". In groups, editors can pin posts to top. Additionally, users can complain about or block unpleasant people. Because of the large volume of data that users submit to the service, Facebook has come under scrutiny for its privacy policies. PDAC 2012 Bill Dennis Award
The Bill Dennis Award for a Canadian discovery or prospecting success This award, named for a former president of the association, honours individuals who have accomplished one or both of the following: made a significant mineral discovery; made an important contribution to the prospecting and/or exploration industry. The award may also be used to recognize an important mineral discovery in Canada. Gerald Panneton, president and CEO of Detour Gold Corp., receives this award for his leadership of the team that has advanced the Detour Lake property in northern Ontario into a world-class, low-grade, high tonnage gold deposit. Panneton spearheaded the initial acquisition and subsequent evaluation of what is now determined to be Canada's largest undeveloped gold deposit. Recognizing the potential of Detour Lake in 2006, Panneton commissioned a large-scale drilling and re-sampling program. By the end of 2010, the project had proven and probable open pit reserves of 14.9 M oz of gold. Detour Gold Corp. is now moving ahead with the development of the project.

About the LMO Blacklist for Work Visa Non-Compliance: As reported by the Government of Canada; "The Government of Canada recently introduced changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program allowing the Government to suspend or revoke the LMOs of employers found to be, or suspected to be, non-compliant with program requirements. The names of employers whose LMOs are suspended or revoked will also be added to a new public "blacklist." " LMO to Hire Foreign Skilled Workers The employer must send a copy of the positive LMO along with a detailed 'job offer letter' to the foreign skilled worker. Canadian employers are required by CIC to prepare a formal employment contract or what our industry refers to as the 'Job Offer Letter', which must include: - Job title for the position - Job description - Requirements for the position - Details about start and end dates - Specifics about the salary - The name and address of the employer Canada Service Agency will ensure that the job offer is legit and real. Once the Canadian immigration department has confirmed the job offer with a Labour Market Opinion (LMO), then the CIC will grant employment authorization for the company's future employees to work in Canada. Once the LMO is granted, the Canadian employer can extend a temporary job offer to the foreign skilled worker.
