There are two types of mining: underground mining and surface mining. When the coal seam is fewer than 125 feet under the surface, it is mined by surface mining. Coal that is deeper than 125 feet is removed from the ground by underground mining. Underground mining is used when the coal seam lies deep in the earth. In an underground mine only some of the coal is removed. The coal that remains helps support the mine roof. Underground mines look like a system of tunnels. The tunnels are used for traveling throughout the mine, moving coal from place to place and allowing air to circulate in the mine. The coal that is mined is put on conveyor belts. The conveyor belts take the coal to the surface. There are three types of underground mines: slope, drift, and shaft. When the coal seam is close to the surface but too deep to use surface mining, a slope mine can be built. In a slope mine a tunnel slants down from the surface to the coal seam. A drift mine is built when the coal seam lies in the side of a hill or mountain. Drift mines may also be built in a surface mine that has become too deep. There are many drift mines in the eastern United States. The most common type of mine in Illinois is the shaft mine. These mines may be 125 to 1,000 feet deep. A large hole, or shaft, is drilled down into the ground until it reaches the coal seam.

Once formed, they climb back towards the surface. On their way, cap rocks can impede their progress and they accumulate in reservoir rocks. Here they constitute hydrocarbon fields, which can be identified by interpreting seismic data (a sort of echography). The data is obtained with the help of a seismic ship. To confirm the interpretations of seismic data, two types of drilling gear exist. Each is adapted to a range of depth of water (down to more than 2500 meters). The platform seen here is a semi-submersible, which floats and retains its stabilised position by means of anchors fixed on the seabed. Platforms at sea are used not only for drilling but also for the production of hydrocarbons. This production consists of the separation of oil, gas and water, before the oil and gas is taken by pipeline towards a mainland terminal. Where it is impossible or too expensive to link the field to the coast by a pipeline, an FPSO ship is used (Floating Production Storage and Offloading barge). Onboard, the hydrocarbons and the water are separated. The oil is stored prior to being loaded on tankers and the gas is re-injected into the reservoir rocks. Gas from a field is taken to land through an underground gasoduct to a processing plant. There, if the gas is to be transported by sea, it is converted into liquid obtained by cooling it down to --163°C. When it arrives at the plant terminal, the liquid natural gas (LNG) is returned to its gaseous state in a re-gasification plant, before being introduced into the local gasoduct network. The LNG is stored in tanks before re-gasification. The crude oil is transported in a petroleum tanker, the capacity of which can attain 200 000 tons. It is commonly called a "super- tanker". The terminals capable of receiving such giants are few and far between. The ships used to transport the crude oil produced on an FPSO ship are of a much smaller capacity. The crude oil, before being refined, is stored in the port in the large capacity tanks. The natural gas is preserved in reservoirs (artificial or natural). It is ready to be injected by pumping into the gasoduct network for industrial and domestic use or as fuel in power-generating stations. As far as the crude oil goes, it is transported by oleoduct to the refinery. There it undergoes a number of transformations and blending. In addition to rock samples, drilling technology can unearth samples of connate fluids and of the subsurface biosphere, mostly microbial life, preserved in drilled samples. Most of the technology used for drilling come from advances in the oil and gas industry. Scientific drilling is carried out on land by the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) and at sea by the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP). Scientific drilling on the continents includes drilling down into solid ground as well as drilling from small boats on lakes. Sampling thick glaciers and ice sheets to obtain ice cores is related but will not be described further here. Like probes sent into outer space, scientific drilling is a technology used to obtain samples from places that people cannot reach. Human beings have descended as deep as 2,080 m (6,822 ft) in Voronya Cave, the world's deepest known cave, located in the Caucasus mountains of the country of Georgia. Gold miners in South Africa regularly go deeper than 3,400 m, but no human has ever descended to greater depths than this below the Earth's solid surface. As depth increases into the Earth, temperature and pressure rise. Scientific drilling is interdisciplinary and international in scope. Individual scientists cannot generally undertake scientific drilling projects alone. Humans have reached the moon and are planning to return samples from Mars, but when it comes to exploring the land deep beneath our feet, we have only scratched the surface of our planet. This may be about to change with a $1 billion mission to drill 6 km (3.7 miles) beneath the seafloor to reach the Earth's mantle -- a 3000 km-thick layer of slowly deforming rock between the crust and the core which makes up the majority of our planet -- and bring back the first ever fresh samples. It could help answer some of our biggest questions about the origins and evolution of Earth itself, with almost all of the sea floor and continents that make up the Earth´s surface originating from the mantle. Geologists involved in the project are already comparing it to the Apollo Moon missions in terms of the value of the samples it could yield. However, in order to reach those samples, the team of international scientists must first find a way to grind their way through ultra-hard rocks with 10 km-long (6.2 miles) drill pipes -- a technical challenge that one of the project co-leaders Damon Teagle, from the UK's University of Southampton calls, "the most challenging endeavor in the history of Earth science." 'A ship flying in space:' Earth seen through the eyes of an astronaut Their task will be all the more difficult for being conducted out in the middle of the ocean. It is here that the Earth´s crust is at its thinnest at around 6 km compared to as much as 60 km (37.3 miles) on land. Drilling all the way to the mantle would also give geologists a look at what they call the Mohorovičić discontinuity, or Moho, for short. Above this mysterious zone, named for the Croatian seismologist who discovered it in 1909, seismic waves travel at around 4.3 miles per second, a rate consistent with those waves traveling through basalt, or cooled lava. Below the Moho, the waves rip along at around 5 miles per second, similar to the rate they travel through a silica-poor type of igneous rock called peridotite. The Moho typically lies between 3 to 6 miles below the ocean floor and anywhere between 12 to 56 miles beneath the continents. This zone has long been considered the crust-mantle boundary, where material gradually cools and sticks to the overlying crust. But some lab studies suggest it’s possible that the Moho represents the zone where water seeping down from the overlying crust reacts with mantle peridotites to create a type of mineral called serpentine. This possibility is exciting, Dick and MacLeod suggest. The geochemical reactions that generate serpentine also produce hydrogen, which can then react with seawater to produce methane, a source of energy for some types of bacteria. Or, the researchers note, the Moho could be something else entirely unknown to science. An asteroid with a core glows evenly from all angles. If you see dim or unlit spots, move on. 3.) All core asteroids seem to be the same shape depending on ring type. Once you've seen a few for the ring type you're in you'll know what to look for. 4.) Asteroids with a core will have visible fissures on the surface. I know I'm not the best with fixed weapons, but this is the first time I've encountered a seemingly indestructible surface deposit. I've notice others have had problems like this, so I thought it best to record it. For reference, most other times I've used the Abrasion Blaster, I've been able to free the surface deposits with a single shot. Also, don't ask why I'm mining in an ice ring, it's just because it's fairly bright in there.

I really was looking forward to blow up an asteroid with a seismic charge (new mining tools). And yes, I know I put too much charges on it and it should not go to red level, but it should only show the BOOM, I was not planning to actually mine it. And it did blow up quite spectacular. So here is it. 01:17 KA-BOOM !!! Oh that was real fun :) I love the new mining tools. Aiming with the Seismic charge and the subsurface displacement missile it still quite difficult, especcially if the hardpoints are farther away from the ships center. You then have to aim off the center. Abrasion blaster on the other hand is quite easy to use. Its a very nice addition to the old mining lasers to keep things interesting but no clear replacement, which is good IMHO.

Preparations for undertaking one of Britain’s largest ever environmental projects are advancing rapidly. Radioactive Waste Management is a public sector delivery body tasked with disposing of Britain’s higher activity radioactive waste. A complex 60-year legacy of waste needs to be managed to protect people and the environment from its harmful properties. The safest and most sustainable way to deal with higher activity waste is to emplace it in a geological disposal facility (GDF). Geological disposal combines engineered and natural barriers working together to isolate a GDF from humans and surface processes, and to prevent migration of radionuclides to the surface environment. Natural barriers are provided by the geology in which the GDF will be hosted, plus any overlying low-permeability sedimentary layers. GDF delivery requires a suitable site – not the perfect geology – and a willing community (the ‘social licence to operate’). Among major infrastructure programmes, it is possibly uniquely challenged by the need for public consent and the very long timescales, of both GDF programme duration and the geological length of the post-closure safety period 100,000 years. Conceptual designs have been developed for geological disposal in three broad categories of host rock type: Higher-Strength Rock (HSR) such as hard, fractured crystalline rocks, very low-permeability Lower-Strength Sedimentary Rock (LSSR), and rock salt. Examples from overseas include Finland and Sweden where granitic HSR is the host rock for GDFs they are developing, Jurassic clay-rich LSSRs are the host in France and Switzerland, and the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico is constructed in Permian rock salt. Site selection is consent-based and RWM will work in partnership with local communities over a period of many decades through the site selection, site investigation and operational stages of this 100+ year programme.

For more information please visit: http://www.ibblaw.co.uk/service/residential-development Q.What are mines and minerals and how could they affect a development site? A. Any residential developer will realise the importance of obtaining good and marketable title to a development site so that they are ultimately able to pass that title on to home buyers and -- in particular -- their lenders. There could, however, be issues in proving good and marketable title to land if a third party can claim ownership of the subsurface or subsoil of a development site -- sometimes referred to as "mines and minerals". Q. Doesn't a developer or landowner automatically own the land beneath the surface of his land? A. Although a landowner may generally assume that he owns the surface of his land as well as the ground beneath it and the air space above it, there are exceptions to this. And it is quite possible for the ownership of the subsoil to land to be separated from the ownership of the surface and be owned by a third party. There was much publicity around mines and minerals towards the end of 2013 when the Church Commissioners and the Crown were registering their manorial rights to mines and minerals (although this was in a slightly different context).   Q. What are the implications of a third party owning the subsoil? A. The implication of a third party owning the subsoil to your land is that works done to it which interfere with the materials below the surface, such as constructing the foundations of a building, may amount to trespass, and the owner of the subsoil may, therefore, lodge a claim against you for damages or seek an injunction to prevent further interference. Q. How can a developer or landowner determine if the subsoil of his land is owned by a third party? A. You can find out who owns the subsoil to land by carrying out a search of the Index Map at the Land Registry (if the land is registered) or by examining the title deeds (if the land is unregistered). Your legal advisers would normally do this for you as part of the due diligence carried out before you buy the land. Q. What can a developer or landowner do if the subsoil of his land belongs to a third party? A. There are two things you can do if you discover that the subsoil of your land, or land you are about to buy, belongs to a third party: 1. You could seek to obtain insurance against any claims that the owner of the subsoil may bring against you. 2. You could also approach the owner of the subsoil in order to procure a release of such rights. However, bear in mind that if you do this and the owner is not prepared to release their rights, or you cannot reach a deal with them, you may not be able to obtain mining indemnity insurance because insurers don't usually allow contact with the owner. There are various other factors that could affect any indemnity insurance available and/or the level of any premium payable. However each case would need to be looked at on it's own facts. Field tools may be nothing more than a rock hammer and hand lens. Hardrock gold deposits are more varied in mineralogy and geology than placer deposits, and prospecting methods can be very different for different types of deposits. As with placer gold, the sophistication of methods used to prospect for hardrock gold vary with the financial resources of the prospector. Drilling is often used to explore the subsurface. Surface geophysical methods may be used to locate geophysical anomalies associated with gold deposits. Samples of rocks or soil may be collected for geochemical laboratory assay, to determine metal content or detect geochemical anomalies.[5] Hardrock gold particles may be too small to see, even with a microscope. Most gold today is produced in large open-pit and deep underground mines. However, small-scale gold mining is still common, especially in third-world countries. A recent study by Australian scientists found that termites have been found to excrete trace deposits of gold. According to the CSIRO, the termites burrow beneath eroded subterranean material which typically masks human attempts to find gold, and ingest and bring the new deposits to the surface. Digital Geology is an innovative approach in Subsurface Learning in which geological outcrops are brought into the office environment and augmented reality techniques are used with real geological exhibits (rock slabs, cores, fossils) to provide the experience of hands-on reservoir characterization work combined with digital overlays. Five geological exhibits, representing different scales of geological analysis and investigation (ranging from “basin” scale to “grain” scale) have been constructed and integrated through interactive exercises in the existing learning programs in Shell. Digital Geology is an efficient way to upgrade the quality of existing geological field trips, by having a virtual reconnaissance trips upfront, thus reducing the length of the real field trip and the associated HSSE-exposure.
