Why is it important to understand top dead center vs. overlap on a 4-stroke?

04:15
One of the most misunderstood areas when working on 4-stroke engines is the placement of the piston for inspection and assembly procedures. Check out this video for close-up photos and in-depth explanation of the two positions. For some reason, I find many entry level techs all too often “choose” the overlap position when setting TDC. They soon learn that this just simply requires re-work. Let’s try to avoid this waste of time. Dig in and clearly learn your craft. I often get asked this question: Q: How does one learn these skill sets "every mechanic should know" if they are not found in a manual? A: NUMBER 1.....GET DIRTY and start wrenching. -Ask questions -Find a seasoned craftsman to mentor under -Tech schools can significantly speed this time up -Research, read, watch YouTube videos Tip: You will never learn it all from one source or in a short time period. No matter what craft you are trying to master, YOU must be dedicated and put the time in. THERE IS NO BETTER WAY TO LEARN THAN DOING! I will say it again, you must actually do the work to master it. You cannot just watch or read about it and master anything. You want to be a master bike builder, mechanic, welder, nurse, carpenter or you fill in the blank? -Don't take for granted opportunities to learn deeper -Be humble and seek advice -Be intentional with your learning plan -Don't blame a school, job or your parents for not giving you ever answer, go get it! Float Height: Inspection and adjustment the RIGHT & WRONG way! Demo on: YZ250F

04:29
In this video, I show you the two most common reasons for setting float height incorrect. Let’s look at them separately. - Carb orientation o You just want the float tab kissing the float needle BUT the needle is fully seated. Cleanliness is key along with needle to seat fitment. Think: no burs or damaged from removal that would cause the assembly to not work smoothly together! - A true understanding or how the float needle is designed o That little spring loaded point on the float needle acts as a cushion or damper to aid in the life of the needle. If you set your float height with this collapsed, it will be off. Having an understanding of the engineering behind the parts will always aid in your craftsmanship while turning wrenches. How to use a crow's foot wrench adapter. Demo done on Yamaha R6 chain adjuster nut.

03:15
Here’s a quick video on “how to use a crow’s foot adapter” to properly torque a nut. In our example, we are torquing the chain adjuster locknut found on a Yamaha R6. I’m teaching these students not to adhere to “good enough” and to make it a practice of following the service manual procedures. Some would say this is not needed and over-kill. My style of instruction is to incorporate “muscle memory” into service manual usage and buying into the confidence of doing it correctly. How to diagnose electrical faults with ease using the Power Probe!

04:11
New Electrical Systems video: We had a student with a long-term problem of dash lights that quit working on their Suzuki. I demonstrate how to use the Power Probe to diagnose this within minutes. Do you struggle with electrical diagnosis? Wanting to be a rock-star with electrical? Let me train you! Here is a solid flow chart for fast accurate diagnosis. Tip 1-4 HAS to be is good integrity ALWAYS. As I worked on my personal craftsmanship when performing electrical repairs, I've found that it's just good practice to "maintain" these items 1-4 regardless. I previously would work backwards on this list to diagnose problems the fastest. I found that building steps 1-4 into muscle memory not only made me consistent when troubleshooting electrical problems, but improved the quality of my work. Here is my list. Repair or maintenance as you go. Think: clean connections and dielectric grease connections! Electrical diagnosis Checklist: 1. Battery testing (load tested!) 2. Ground Verification 3. Locate Wire Diagram (This is a real time saver) 4. Fuse Inspection 5. Test for Power to component connector (vehicle side of harness) 6. Test for component Ground 7. Isolate component from vehicle and bench test with the Power Probe. Feel free to share if you like it or know someone this lesson will benefit. How to get a "feel" for the correct feeler gauge when adjusting valves-thread type valve adjusters

02:42
Do you struggle with confidence when selecting the correct feeler gauge while adjusting valves? Here is a great engine to practice on. The Honda GCV 160 has such light spring pressure, if you try to "force" a larger than actual one in, it will open the valve. The benefit to practicing on this engine is you can really gain a "feel" for the right amount of drag for the feeler gauge. Thank you for watching. Please subscribe and share my work! How to precisely install ANY brand of adjustable pushrod for Twin Cam EVO Sportster Big Twin!

06:04
Some manufacturers instruct to set the install pushrod length by “flats” and others “turns”. In this lesson, I explain both methods of installation. I also demonstrate what it is we are doing in theory along with a bonus tip on what I feel is the ultimate way to verify what each revolution of a turn equals on ANY brand pushrod. This tip was taught to me by the machinist/engine builder Clay Jensen of Sioux City Powersports. This is very useful tip when dealing with a used engine and you don’t know the brand of pushrod. It also allows a method to remove that old human error of “assuming”. As you will learn with a little research, even the same brand of pushrod manufacturers used different thread pitches! In the end, flats or turns must equal the required thousands of an inch in length. Watch this video for your free lesson! How to test a radiator cap AND not get false results!

05:39
Here I show how to test a radiator cap without false results. A diagnostic tech has the tools and knowledge to prove their work, not just assume and replace. Falsely “diagnosing” a failed cap as the reason an engine is overheating will NOT fix the source problem and your customer will be back. Consider that each part of the system has its own function. Why you should verify your Oil Injection System on a "new to you" 2 stroke powered vehicle!

04:13
Check out my thoughts on what to do when you purchase a vehicle that uses an oil injection system. Many times there are things you just have to learn over time when being a mechanic. This is one of those "just better check it" situations. If you don't, you'll wish you did in a hurry. Click the links to playlists: (entire list link is the last one) Harley EVO: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAtBOuPaEyt95-wqtiOFk3tzUW2VARbHI Harley Twin Cam: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAtBOuPaEyt_7aGpzL9DxDVZy_fofjo1G 4-Stroke Engines: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAtBOuPaEyt-iDjXbKCN_b7_oRwTW2uAY 2-Stroke Engines: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAtBOuPaEyt_pO6zS6U7Rpjk-uCEYZZ8O "Every Mechanic Should Know This Training": https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAtBOuPaEyt_uMyVlK1tsBVnSYW1Q0vCK Transmission: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAtBOuPaEyt_VMoD82dhOk5XpIXMUASOU Wheels, tires, brakes: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAtBOuPaEyt8u703ZrvtvAUUuKIv6p2Ck Electrical: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAtBOuPaEyt_y8Ua2r49WYf0nLzYXT9eA Fuel, air, intake: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAtBOuPaEyt-ZMVRlpvWmVFLL10P16vWf Suspension: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAtBOuPaEyt-SLKUotAxQE1llsyQ_T0x2 All playlists by type: https://www.youtube.com/user/conleybuilt/playlists You will see that many of the tips and procedures used are universal for skill sets "every mechanic should know" and that the biggest value to my videos is the teaching of these skills that are not found in a service manual. I teach a motorcycle/powersports technician program at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City, Iowa. These videos are used for review of labs for students and creating a deeper understanding of the lesson/skill set. I teach a motorcycle/powersports technician program at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City, Iowa. These videos are used for review of labs for students and creating a deeper understanding of the lesson/skill set.
